Former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta’s legal representation has reacted to the Office of the Special Prosecutor’s (OSP) request that their client appear in person on February 10, 2025, by indicating that he was abroad for medical treatment.
In a letter dated January 31, the lawyers explained why Mr Ofori-Atta was unable to report before the OSP as required on January 24, 2025.
According to the lawyers, Mr Ofori-Atta was initially unaware of the OSP letter, which was left at his security post while he was out of the country. They also stated that he informed both the former and current Chief of Staff about his medical vacation earlier in January.
According to the legal team, Ofori-Atta is currently undergoing medical observation and examinations, with treatment options still being decided.
As a result, they asked the OSP to reschedule his in-person appearance after he returned to Ghana. Meanwhile, they expressed their willingness to supply any information necessary to assist the investigation.
The letter came shortly after the OSP conducted a news conference on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, declaring Mr Ofori-Atta a fugitive.
He labeled him a fugitive for allegedly causing financial loss to the state in many transactions. The OSP has launched an investigation into alleged corruption and related offenses involving many contractual agreements, including those between Strategic Mobilization Ghana Limited and the Ghana Revenue Authority, the Electricity Company of Ghana and Beijing Xiao Cheng Technology (BXC), the National Cathedral project, and the Ministry of Health’s ambulance procurement.

Before Wednesday’s press, various media sources suggested that Mr Ofori-Atta’s residence in Accra had been invaded by individuals believed to be security agents.
However, Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng indicated during the press conference that the OSP had nothing to do with the alleged raid.
