Ken Agyapong, a former member of parliament for Assin Central, has formally declared his intention to withdraw from the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) ongoing “Thank You” tour, citing concerns over the safety of his supporters.
His choice comes in the wake of a violent event in which a student from Unity Hall’s affiliated Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) was stabbed.
Ken Agyapong’s crew had recruited the victim, who was a member of Unity Hall’s Jama group, to perform at the event at the Pentecost Church in Bantama, Kumasi.
Ken Agyapong’s team claims that the Jama organisation received funding from a rich friend of the former MP who was present at the event. A group of men, presumably from the NPP, allegedly used force to seize the money.
Gunshots were fired amid a conflict between the armed guys and the Jama group. One Jama group member was stabbed in the confusion.
The victim is still undergoing treatment after being taken to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital’s emergency room.
Since then, Ken Agyapong and his group have formally complained to the Kumasi Central Police Command.
Agyapong promised to seek justice for the victim and confirmed his departure from the tour in a media appearance on Wednesday.
“I don’t think I can adequately safeguard my crew because of what happened yesterday, and we want to pull out because lives are at danger. Therefore, we wish to go so that Dr. Bawumia can carry out his campaign.
