‘It will be disastrous if Mahama removes the Chief Justice’ – Prof. Stephen Adei

Former Rector of the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), Professor Stephen Adei, has raised severe reservations over President-elect John Dramani Mahama’s likely removal of the Chief Justice.

According to Professor Adei, such a move would set a dangerous precedent with long-term consequences for Ghana’s courts and democratic stability.

During an interview with TV3 on Sunday, December 23, 2024, Professor Adei underlined the importance of protecting the judiciary’s independence from political meddling.

He claimed that the court is a crucial component of democracy, and that changing its leadership for political purposes could undermine public trust in the institution.

“It would be disastrous if Mr. Mahama removed the Chief Justice,” Professor Adei stated. “Such a move would reinforce a very terrible habit that does not bode good for the country’s future. We must resist the temptation to politicize all aspects of administration, particularly the court.”

He also stressed the importance of political leaders putting institutional integrity ahead of party interests.

Professor Adei urged all stakeholders to ensure that judicial nominations and removals adhere to constitutional laws and justice values, warning that any divergence might have serious ramifications for Ghana’s democratic progress.
