The 20-year-old finished with a timing of 10.17 seconds after becoming the first Irish athlete to compete in the European Championship final.

Lamont Marcell Jacobs, the Olympic champion, defeated British defending champion Zharnel Hughes in the finals with a time of 9.95 seconds (9.99). Jeremiah Azu finished third with a 10.13.

 

Olatunde beat Paul Hession’s 15-year-old national record by 0.02 seconds in a closely contested race.
The Dundalk competitor advanced to the final by placing second to Jacobs in the third heat on Tuesday night.

Regarding his record accomplishments, Olatunde told RTÉ Sport that “it’s just amazing.”
“I really can’t believe I’m here in a European final, getting a national record and finishing sixth. I had no clue I could run that quickly. A dream has come true.

“The crowd and the atmosphere were both incredible. I’m on par with these men, who are among the swiftest in all of Europe. I’m thrilled to be there and eager to learn how I can absolutely get better.
