Imane Khelif wins boxing quarterfinal bout as Olympics gender controversy continues

The controversial Algerian boxer Imane Khelif defeated Anna Luca Hamori of Hungary via unanimous decision on Saturday in the women’s welterweight quarterfinal round, guaranteeing her a medal at the Olympics.

The point of contention is the fact that Khelif’s passport identity is the basis for their qualification for the Olympics, which makes him eligible to compete. There, Khelif is identified as a woman.

However, the New York Post reports that Khelif was ruled out of the 2023 world championships “because her elevated levels of testosterone failed to meet the eligibility criteria.” The world championships are held by the International Boxing Association, which is governed by Russia and follows a different set of rules.

The controversy went viral when Imane Khelif’s powerful punches caused Italy’s Angela Carini to quit just 46 seconds into their round-of-16 match earlier in the week.
