Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly called Chairman Wontumi, has opened up about his ordeal while in the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
Wontumi was picked up on May 27, 2025, after being invited by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) over allegations of fraud, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state.
Speaking at a political gathering in the Adansi Asokwa constituency on Wednesday, September 10, he described his time in detention as harrowing, saying the conditions were so harsh that he felt close to death.
“The cell I was kept in was extremely small, just about the width of three leg counts,” he recounted. “Where I slept nearly killed me.”
He further claimed that what he experienced went beyond physical suffering, insisting he spiritually sensed the presence of deceased relatives—an indication to him that his life was about to end.
“When a person is near death, you feel it. You begin to see or sense your departed loved ones around you, a sign that you are about to join them,” he said.
Drawing a dramatic parallel, Chairman Wontumi likened his suffering to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.
“I felt death hovering around me, just like when Christ cried out, ‘Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani.’ At that moment, I also cried out, ‘People of Ghana, arise! Ghana, arise! I am being treated this way because of you,’” he declared
