Hearts and Kotoko not banned from stadiums – GFA denies reports

Accra Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko have not been barred from playing at their home venues, with security enhancements underway.

This is according to a top member of the Ghana Football Association

The General Secretary of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Prosper Harrison Addo, has denied that Accra Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko have been barred from using their home stadiums.

He clarified that following an assessment by the GFA Club Licensing Committee, security vulnerabilities were identified at the Legon Sports Stadium and Baba Yara Stadium that must be rectified.

Addo emphasised that the GFA is working with the Ministry of Sports, affected clubs, and stadium facility management to quickly remedy the issues.

In an interview with Asempa FM, he stated:

There have been complications with some of the safety zones, necessitating the deployment of additional police personnel, possibly fifty or more on each sides, to prevent supporters from entering those areas.

The primary goal is to construct a metal gate to keep people out. We are working with the club and the Ministry of Sports, so all parties must agree on the security protocols.

Hearts, Kotoko at liberty.

He further highlighted that both clubs are free to choose whether or not to use these locations this weekend.

Addo added:

So, the club will decide whether to play there or elsewhere this weekend. We ask everyone to be calm; nobody has prohibited Hearts of Oak from utilising the Legon Stadium or the Accra Sports Stadium. Similar renovations must be completed at the Baba Yara Stadium to work on the security zone gate. We are working with Kotoko and Hearts of Oak to remedy the issue, not evicting them from their venues.

Earlier reports stated that the GFA declared the stadium inadequate for Ghana Premier League (GPL) matches after performing a facility inspection and advised the club to find an other venue.
