The freshly rebuilt A4 and A5 wards of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) have been officially handed over to the hospital’s management for inpatient care, marking a significant step forward in the “Heal Komfo Anokye” project.
The reconstruction of the two wards is part of the first phase of the $10 million renovation program led by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
This project intends to restore Ghana’s second-largest referral hospital, which has been in disrepair for more than 70 years.
The wards, which have undergone a significant transformation with the installation of cutting-edge medical equipment and services, will each house 32 patients over five floors.
Mr. Justice Amoh, Chief Executive Officer of the Justmoh Group of Companies, paid the entire $1.2 million renovation cost.
During the handover ceremony, Mr. Amoh asked medical staff to preserve the new facility to ensure its survival.
Mr. Sammy Adu Boakye, Chairman of the Heal Komfo Anokye project, praised Mr. Amoh’s major effort and emphasised the significance of safeguarding the investment. He confirmed that the project team is committed to complete additional phases in the coming months.
Mr. Fred Effah, Director of Administration at KATH, underlined the hospital’s critical role in providing healthcare to 12 of Ghana’s 16 districts.
He emphasised the importance of restoration and expansion activities in improving service delivery and accommodating the growing number of patients from the country’s central and northern regions.
Management at KATH expressed gratitude for the remodelling, calling it as a historic accomplishment that will improve patient care and overall service delivery.
The Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s Heal Komfo Anokye initiative, which will be started in November 2023, aims to attract funding from private individuals and business organizations to modernize hospital facilities.
The effort was launched when the Asantehene voiced worry about the hospital’s worsening situation and demanded for immediate action.
The successful completion of the A4 and A5 wards marks a big step towards realising the project’s overall goal of revitalising Ghana’s second-largest teaching hospital.
