In the late 1970s, Weinstein and his brother established the independent film distribution company Miramax using profits from their concert promotion business. They named the company after their parents, Miriam and Max, who were both film distributors.

On October 8, 2017, Harvey Weinstein was fired from The Weinstein Company after a list of sexual abuse charges was released to the press.
In 2018, The Weinstein Company went bankrupt after a number of months of failed attempts to sell the company or its library of movies. Lantern Entertainment was ultimately successful in bidding on and purchasing all of the company’s assets.
The company was shut down on July 16, 2018, and its website sometime thereafter. A year after that, Weinstein was arrested, and another year after that, in 2020, he was found guilty and sentenced to 23 years in prison for his actions.
