GWL to shut down Barekese Water Treatment Plant

The Barekese Water Treatment Plant will be shut down on schedule, according to Ghana Water Limited (GWL) management in the Ashanti Region.

The shutdown is scheduled to take place from Monday, March 17th until Wednesday, March 19th, 2025.

This temporary pause in operations is necessary to allow for the construction of new interconnection pipelines and foot valves at the Suame roundabout, which is projected to improve the metropolis’ water supply.

In a statement, GWL acknowledged the trouble this may cause to the impacted communities, which include Offinso, the entire Kumasi Metropolis, and its surrounding areas.

However, management has informed the public that their devoted team of engineers will work carefully to restore the water supply within the specified time limit.

“This measure is in line with GWL’s commitment to enhance the water supply capacity from the Barekese Water Treatment Plant to improve water service delivery and address the supply challenges in the metropolis,” according to a statement.

GWL has encouraged all vital service providers, particularly hospitals and schools in the area, to ensure they have enough supplies for the length of the shutdown.

GWL’s management expressed great remorse for the inconvenience but begged consumers to bear with the situation, stressing that the project intends to improve the overall water services supplied to the public.
