The Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) has halted the proposed 20% rise in public transport fares, which was set to take effect on Friday, August 8, 2025.
The Transport Ministry made this announcement after a high-level meeting with road transport unions on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.
The government organised the conference to address concerns about the lack of broader stakeholder discussions prior to the planned fare change.
In a statement made by the Transport Ministry following the meeting, GRTCC and other transport operators agreed that the planned increase would not be executed, emphasising the importance of broad consultation on future fare increases.
“Transport Operators following the meeting have agreed to suspend the purported 20% increment in public transport fares as a result of the lack of broader consultations on the decision.” The statement said.
The statement also urged all operators to continue with the present rate reduction, which has been in effect since May 2025.
“Transport Operators have therefore agreed to maintain the implementation of the 15% reduction in public transport fares which took effect on 24th May, 2025.”
“We count on the cooperation of all transport operators and the general public,” according to the statement.
The action is likely to provide some relief to commuters who had expressed concerns about the timing of the planned fee increase, especially given the continued economic woes. Transport officials say more extensive consultations will be conducted before any future changes are implemented.
The Ministry continued by stating that “we count on the cooperation of all transport operators and the general public.”
