Asante Kotoko rallied to secure an important point against defending champions Samartex in a thrilling match at the Nsenkyire Sports Arena on Saturday afternoon.
The 1-1 draw kept the Porcupine Warriors at the top of the league table; however, their lead may be brief, with their nearest rivals only a point behind.
Samartex seized the lead in the 39th minute when Dramani Awuah unleashed a thunderous low drive that reached the back of the net, giving Kotoko’s custodian no chance.
The home side, anxious to avenge their earlier 1-0 loss to Kotoko this season, dominated the first half, restricting their opponents’ attacking attempts.
However, Kotoko grew stronger in the second half, demonstrating resilience and offensive intent. Their efforts were rewarded when Kwame Opoku, in fantastic form, equalised with a well-taken goal.
The forward, who has been dangerous in front of goal in the second half of matches this season, felt he had sealed all three points for Kotoko when he scored again.
However, his second goal was called back for offside, depriving him of a brace.
The game was hotly contested, with both teams demonstrating attacking power and strong defensive play.
Samartex, desperate for a win to aid their title defence, pushed forward in quest of a late winner, but Kotoko’s defence held firm, ensuring they returned home with an important point.
Kwame Opoku’s sixth goal of the season solidified his status as an important player for Kotoko, especially in the closing phases of games. His ability to impact games in the second half has really benefited the Porcupine Warriors.
Despite the stalemate, Kotoko leads the league standings by one point above Bibiani GoldStars, who have a chance to catch up when they meet Aduana Stars in Dormaa on Sunday.
Samartex, on the other hand, is in seventh place, well behind the pursuing pack, as their title defence falters.
