Following the viral video of Sammy Gyamfi, the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), presenting dollar notes to Nana Agradaa, the government has reaffirmed its commitment to resolving the expressed concerns with utmost seriousness.

During an interview with Citi FM, Minister of Government Communications Felix Kwakye Ofosu provided this guarantee.

His comments came after significant criticism of the gesture made by the CEO of the Gold Board, with many questioning its appropriateness in light of the current economic circumstances.

While Sammy Gyamfi has subsequently apologised, describing the cash gift as a private gesture of goodwill that was not intended for public consumption, the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, has invited him to the presidency on Monday, May 12 for a comprehensive explanation.

Minister Kwakye Ofosu emphasised that the Chief of Staff’s decision demonstrates the government’s intention to adequately handle the matter.

“Generally, as a government, we respect Ghanaians’ sentiments,” said Mr. Kwakye Ofosu. “We know that since the airing of the video, various sentiments have been expressed.” He went on to say: “It is part of the reasons why the Chief of Staff took the step he has taken today [May 12].”

Mr. Kwakye Ofosu emphasised the administration’s commitment to improved governance standards, saying, “We’re a government that is committed to governing the country in a different way and holding ourselves to high standards.” As a result, we consider the concerns expressed by the general population. This demonstrates that people anticipate a significant break from the free slide experienced under the NPP administration.”

He further stated that President John Dramani Mahama will be fully briefed upon his return to Ghana, at which point any additional action will be considered.

Meanwhile, the Minority in Parliament has demanded Mr. Gyamfi’s suspension pending the outcome of the investigation into the incident.
