Since the beginning of the Fourth Republic in 1992, the National Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have held the majority of political power.

Other political parties, such as the Convention Peoples Party (CCP), the Peoples National Convention (PNC), the Progressive Peoples Party (PPP), and others, have taken part in elections held during the Fourth Republic; however, they have not been able to amass the necessary number of votes to enable them to form a government.

As a result, the New Patriotic Party and the National Democratic Congress now hold sway at the presidential and parliamentary levels.

In a tweet, Dr. John Kwakye said that neither the New Patriotic Party (NPP) nor the National Democratic Congress (NDC) could handle the economy well.

He made the statement, “We require a third force in Ghanaian politics to overthrow the incompetent NPP-NDC duopoly.” [Citation needed]
