Daniel Owusu Koranteng, the managing director of ISPY Company, was remanded into police custody by the Madina Magistrate Court in connection with the death of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale.

Koranteng, also known as Akwase Amakye, is facing a provisional murder charge in connection with the 2019 assassination, a case that has raised widespread concerns about the safety of Ghana’s journalists.

This is the first arrest in the high-profile death, and Koranteng may have important information that will help identify those involved.

On January 16, 2019, Ahmed Hussein-Suale, a member of the Tiger Eye PI investigation team, was fatally murdered near his family home in Madina.

His work includes cooperating with the BBC on an exposé about corruption in African football, which is widely thought to have made him a target.

The murder sparked widespread condemnation and highlighted the dangers that journalists confront while conducting investigative reporting in Ghana.

Koranteng’s arrest follows a thorough investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in collaboration with Ghanaian law enforcement agencies.

According to police sources, evidence, including phone records, shows Koranteng was in communication with Suale in the days preceding his death.

Prosecutors also claim Koranteng was present in Suale’s neighborhood on the night of the homicide.

While Koranteng admits to photographing Suale, he denies selling the images to Kennedy Agyapong, a politician and former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, who publicly exhibited the photos on television and incited violence against Suale.

The prosecution, however, claims that Suale’s counsel identified Koranteng as the person who sent the images to Agyapong.

Kofi Essel, Koranteng’s legal counsel, has denounced the claims as “shambolic,” claiming that the case lacked serious proof.

Essel has applied for bail, claiming that the prosecution has failed to offer sufficient evidence to support the murder charge.

Magistrate Suzzy Nyakotey has delayed the case until April 1 to allow for additional investigation. T

The proceedings have created serious legal issues, including whether the alleged sale of images is a sufficient basis for a murder conviction.

Authorities remain hopeful that Koranteng’s arrest would lead to a breakthrough in the case, bringing justice to Ahmed Suale and shed light on the circumstances behind his terrible death.
