Explosion at Konongo mining shops kills one, several injured

An explosion at stores selling mining explosives in Odumase, near Konongo, in the Asante Akyem Central Municipality of the Ashanti Region, has killed one person and injured several others, including firefighters.

The fire apparently began at one of the shops where dynamite and other explosives used by local miners are sold, resulting in a huge blast that damaged structures and injured several people.

The specific origin of the explosion is unknown, however authorities have confirmed the death of a homeowner.

Firefighters tasked with putting out the blaze were also injured, and some victims’ bodies were reportedly dismembered.

The incident occurred within a few meters from a petrol station, prompting further safety worries in the neighbourhood.

Divisional Officer Grade 2 Joe Bryden, the Asante Akyem Central Municipal Fire Commander, revealed that a citizen who attempted to alert firemen of the risk sadly died.

“He tried to warn the firefighters to back off, but the explosion happened before he could flee. “He was severely injured, and I’ve been told he died,” he said.

Authorities continue to assess the entire scope of casualties and damage as investigations progress.
