Brazil national team head coach Carlo Ancelotti has been sentenced to one year in prison for tax fraud committed in 2014 during his first spell as manager of Real Madrid, according to a report by EFE news agency.

Ancelotti was convicted of deceiving Spanish tax officials after the Spanish court determined that he had improperly declared income received during the 2014 tax year. The seasoned Italian coach has been fined €386,361.93 in addition to the jail term.

Claims of Tax Fraud Totalling More Than €1 Million
Ancelotti was charged by the Spanish Prosecutor’s Office with tax fraud of €1,062,079 for the 2014 (€386,361) and 2015 (€675,718) tax years.

Inconsistencies in his reporting of earnings, including revenue from image rights while working for Real Madrid, are the basis for the allegations.

Ancelotti, however, was exonerated of a different tax offence pertaining to his image rights for the 2015 fiscal year during the same court proceedings.

What Takes Place Next?
Even though Ancelotti was given a sentence, first-time offenders for non-violent crimes who earn terms of less than two years in prison typically do not go to jail and instead obtain suspended sentences or other alternatives.

The decision increases legal pressure ahead of important international competitions, but it has no direct impact on his current position as head coach of Brazil’s national team.
