President John Dramani Mahama has stated that each Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assembly (MMDA) in Ghana will get at least ₵25 million this year.
The money is intended to ensure that local governments have the resources to satisfy the development demands of their areas.
President Mahama addressed MMDCEs at an orientation and training event in Accra on Wednesday, July 18, emphasising the government’s strong commitment to decentralised development and the critical role of local authorities in national advancement.
According to the President, this allocation is consistent with the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) 2024 manifesto, which prioritises local governance on Ghana’s development agenda.
“The NDC platform lays forth a bold, people-centered vision that places local governance at the heart of national development. “You are the first line of the economy,” he said.
President Mahama added that the 2025 budget plan reflects this priority by allocating 80% of the District Assemblies Common Fund to MMDAs.
He also cited important government initiatives as the Clean Up Ghana campaign, Adumawura, the National Apprenticeship Programme, Mahama Cares, and Feed Ghana.
He explained that these are not abstract policies, but rather practical efforts that require strong coordination and competent leadership at the local level to be implemented properly.
He asked district officials to allocate resources based on local goals and medium-term development plans.
“These funds must reflect the needs of your people and be used to deliver real development outcomes,” according to him.
