Electoral Commission reports 18.6m valid voters on current voter roll

The Electoral Commission (EC) has declared that during the most recent limited registration drive, 778,447 new voters were registered, bringing the total number of eligible voters to over 18.6 million.

On Friday, July 19, during a briefing to Parliament on the impending elections on December 7, the chairwoman of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa, gave this update.

According to Jean Mensa, a mop-up exercise is planned to occur from Thursday, August 1 to Saturday, August 3.

This operation aims to ensure that every eligible voter is registered, and it will take place in all district offices, including the recently formed Guan district.

The voter exhibition has been rescheduled for August to allow this mop-up effort.

This adjustment addresses challenges identified during the limited voter registration period, including violence attributed to the guarantor system, which saw individuals being bused to the centers.

As a preventive measure, the EC plans to advocate for the Ghana Card to become the sole identification document for voter registration, aiming to streamline the process and enhance security.

Additionally, the Electoral Commission has recruited 210,000 officials, who will undergo training to ensure they can effectively fulfill their roles.

Jean Mensa also highlighted that the EC now has complete data on all recruited staff, which will facilitate better management and coordination of the electoral process.
