The Electoral Commission (EC) has set Tuesday, September 2, 2025, as the date for a by-election in the Akwatia Constituency in the Eastern Region, following the death of Member of Parliament Ernest Kumi.
The Commission stated that the seat has formally fallen empty in accordance with Article 112(5) of the Constitution, which requires a by-election whenever a parliamentary seat falls vacant.
The EC said on Wednesday, July 30, that it will accept nominations for individuals interested in running in the by-election. “The Commission will receive nominations from prospective candidates for the election of a Member of Parliament for the said constituency,” the document stated.
Nomination Period and Requirements
Nomination forms can be downloaded at the EC’s official website (www.ec.gov.gh) beginning July 30, 2025 and ending August 13, 2025.
Nomination forms will be accepted at the Denkyembour District Office from August 11th to 13th, 2025, between 9:00 am and 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm daily.

Candidates must submit their forms in person, through their proposer or seconder. The forms must be signed by two registered voters (a proposer and a seconder) and approved by 18 other registered voters in the constituency.
In addition to the papers, candidates must provide two passport-sized pictures of their entire face and ears taken against a red background.
Filing fees
The filing cost for each candidate is GH¢10,000. Female applicants and PWDs would pay a reduced cost of GH¢7,500.
