Commonly known as galamsey, illegal mining in Konongo, Ashanti Region, is seriously compromising the supply of power in some areas of the Ashanti and Eastern Regions.
The illegal miners have infiltrated the concession of Northern Ashanti Mines, where GRIDCO substation pylons are situated, therefore compromising vital infrastructure.
The continuous galamsey operations, which have endangered multiple pylons, now threaten a GRIDCO substation located inside the working area of Northern Ashanti Mines.
This scenario increases the likelihood of power disruptions influencing Konongo Township and nearby areas.
The security task force of the mine works hard, however illegal mining still exists in the region. The mining corporation has voiced annoyance, pointing out that its attempts to interact with local security authorities such as the Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC) and the Municipal Security Council (MUSEC) have failed.
Recent escalation saw armed persons attacking the task force of the mining firm, causing injuries and property damage. The state of affairs still seriously challenges the mining activities as well as the electricity supply for the area.
Intelligence indicates the galamseyers intend to launch another attack on the mine and staff, hence, the corporation now worries about an imminent clash between its security staff and illegal miners on Thursday, October 10.
