The minority in Parliament has expressed alarm over the country’s escalating incidences of drug trafficking and money laundering, just three months after the New Patriotic Party (NPP) handed over power to the National Democratic Congress.

According to them, nearly two months after a raid on 12 containers of gold and cash at Sapeiman in Accra, the National Security has failed to update the public on the status of investigations to determine the perpetrators, as well as the actual quantity of gold and specific amount of money seized in the operation.

Furthermore, the caucus has requested accountability for cargo believed to be cocaine and cash brought into the country by two suspicious flights that landed at Kotoka International Airport in March 2025.

Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, the Ranking Member of Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, addressed journalists and encouraged the government to be transparent in its fight against drug trafficking and money laundering.

“We want accountability from National Security for the gold bars and cash retrieved, as well as what they intend to do with them. The Minority Caucus, as responsible opposition as we are in perfect circumspection, has been patient and has originally granted National Security two months to explain the state of their probe to the public,” He asked.

The organisation also blamed the pirate attack on a Ghanaian-registered fishing vessel on March 27, 2025, to NDC MPs’ opposition to the Akufo-Addo government’s planned procurement of two offshore patrol vessels.

“You will recall the previous government’s diligent efforts to procure two offshore vessels for the Ghana Navy in 2024.” The NDC in parliament strongly rejected this idea in its latter phases, calling for the process to be cancelled.

“Indeed, the purchasing procedure was so aborted. Pirates are aware of the Ghana Navy’s lack of offshore patrol vessels, thus our waters’ security vulnerabilities are likely to be exploited,” he stated.
