Committee probing petitions against suspended Chief Justice begins hearings today

The five-member committee appointed by President John Dramani Mahama to investigate petitions against suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo is scheduled to begin hearings today, Thursday, May 15, 2025.

The committee, chaired by Supreme Court Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang, was formed after the president spoke with the Council of State in accordance with Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution.

This development follows the establishment of a prima facie case against the Chief Justice.

Meanwhile, Isaac Boamah-Nyarko, a Member of Parliament from Effia, has questioned the rationale for suspending the Chief Justice nearly three weeks before the committee began its petitions hearing.

On Wednesday, May 14, 2025, he spoke on Point Blank, an Eyewitness News feature, and raised concern about the committee’s lack of a stated schedule.

“If you check, the last time the president suspended the chief justice was on April 22, 2025, which is close to three weeks. My concern is, since the newly formed committee will take more than three weeks to begin meeting, why did you suspend the chief justice?

“Three weeks later, you’re telling us that the committee is about to begin sitting? Then you inform us that the committee should submit their report once they’ve completed their task. Which committee is formed without a timeline? “When you form a committee, you give it a timeline,” he explained.
