CCTVs to be installed in markets to improve security following fire incidents

President John Dramani Mahama has proposed measures to combat the recent increase of market fires around the country.

These efforts include installing CCTV cameras at strategic locations in large markets to improve security and identify those responsible for such incidents.

His statements come after terrible fires burned multiple stores at the Kantamanto Market in Accra, the Timber Market in Tamale, and the Techiman Market, among others, resulting in property losses of millions of cedis.

Addressing victims of the Kantamanto fire disaster on Monday, January 13th, President Mahama voiced his worry about the enormous damage and promised government assistance to impacted businessmen.

He stated that while some of these fires may be caused by poor wiring or substandard materials, others could be the product of purposeful arson, recalling similar instances during his presidency in 2013.

One of the things we need to do is prevent these fires from spreading. In other circumstances, the cause could be improper wiring or the use of inferior materials. However, in rare circumstances, we cannot rule out arson—people purposefully lighting fires to inflict destruction.

I recall that happening in 2013 when I was first sworn in as President. It was unusual to see market fires in practically every market. In several cases, investigations revealed that people intentionally started fires to generate havoc and confusion.

President Mahama announced that emergency steps have been implemented to boost security in major markets around the country, including increased night patrols by the Ghana National Fire Service.

I’ve requested security agencies to collaborate with various security services to increase security around important markets. In addition, we are requesting that the National Fire Service increase night surveillance because these incidents frequently occur at night, raising suspicions of planned acts.

He also revealed plans to deploy fire tenders closer to important marketplaces at night to ensure a quick response in the event of a fire outbreak.

We’re also encouraging them to consider putting CCTV cameras at strategic spots across each market. If somebody is involved in igniting fires, the CCTV will assist us identify them and understand what’s going on.

In his statement, President Mahama also stated that the government is examining alternatives to repair the affected markets and support traders in restoring their stores.
