The Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has announced that Cabinet has approved the reinstatement of road and bridge tolls as part of measures to enhance the country’s road maintenance system.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series at Jubilee House on Wednesday, July 30, the minister stated that the focus will be on implementing contemporary toll collection technologies to improve efficiency and decrease leakages.

Mr Agbodza stated that the new toll system will solve previous inefficiencies and eliminate manual toll collecting methods, which were frequently riddled with corruption and delays.

“The Cabinet has approved the reinstatement of road and bridge tolls, but with a new approach. “We are looking into technology-driven collection systems that will be seamless and transparent,” he stated.

The Minister said that the decision is part of broader changes aimed at ensuring appropriate and sustainable funding for road maintenance throughout the country.

He also stated that toll earnings will be set aside to fund the routine maintenance of vital road infrastructure.

He also assured Ghanaians that the reinstated toll system would be handled in a way that would cause as little trouble as possible for passengers.

“We are committed to doing this correctly. It is not just about reintroducing tariffs but also about establishing a legitimate system that ensures value for every cedi paid,” he said.
