John Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, donated GH¢50,000 to the Buzstopboys, a volunteer sanitation organization.
The purpose of this donation is to help the Buzstopboys buy supplies and machinery for their Clean Ghana campaign.
Mahama emphasized the value of volunteerism in preserving urban cleanliness during the donation occasion.
He emphasized the difficulties brought forth by urban anonymity and the growing amounts of rubbish generated in metropolitan areas.
He pointed out that, due to their growing population, metropolitan centers frequently lack the communal hygiene norms found in rural areas.
Mahama reflected on his early years, recalling the habit of cleaning the house and its environs first thing in the morning, which he noticed had diminished with time.
Mahama commended the Buzstopboys for their commitment to enhancing sanitation, saying that when he saw the guys, young people, filling in that gap, he encouraged them.
He noted the significant problem of plastic pollution, particularly highlighting the prevalence of plastic and styrofoam food packaging.
He called on the public to support the efforts of groups like the Buzstopboys, emphasizing that his support was non-partisan.
Mahama’s donation follows a similar act of generosity by award-winning reggae/dancehall artist Shatta Wale, who recently contributed GH¢30,000 to the Buzstopboys.
These combined efforts underscore a growing recognition of the need for community-driven initiatives to address the sanitation challenges facing Ghana.
The Buz Stop Boys have over the past months received massive commendation for their efforts to keep Accra clean after clearing choked gutters in numerous communities.
