Bole Chief Imam bans extravagant Islamic weddings in area

The Office of the Bole Chief Imam has issued an immediate ban on extravagant marriages in the Bole Traditional Area due to the exorbitant costs and aberrant behaviour connected with such celebrations.

This was stated in a statement issued on March 5 by the area’s Chief Imam, Alhaji Mohammed Iddrisu.

I am grateful to inform your esteemed office that I, the Chief Imam (Alhaji Mohammed Iddrisu) of Bole Traditional Area, after several council meetings with Islamic clergy, wish to impose a ban on extravagant Islamic weddings within my jurisdiction that do not adhere to Islamic practices beginning Wednesday, March 5, 2025.

The prohibition forces persons planning weddings to follow Islamic norms.

Among the practices that will be prohibited during wedding ceremonies are:

• At receptions, couples wear multiple clothes.

• Male beauticians, in which men dress as the other gender.

• Record dance, sometimes known as ‘jams’

According to the statement, the decision was made to combat deviant practices among youth while also reducing the substantial costs associated with such practices.

It is claimed that the exorbitant expense has prevented many young people in the area from marrying as they wish.

This ruling intends to discourage deviant activities that increase wedding costs, making it difficult for many young people to marry.
