Both men and women failed to make it to the podium in their individual events, despite great expectations.
Athletes from Ghana competed in the men’s 100-meter final: Barnabas Aggerh, who was competing in his debut outdoor event, and Benjamin Azamati, who now holds the record for the country with a time of 9.97 seconds. Both athletes, regrettably, were unable to secure a medal.
Benjamin Azamati struggles in 100m final as Ghana misses out on medal
The time of 10.45 seconds put Benjamin Azamati in fifth place, and 10.50 seconds put Aggerh in sixth.
People watching were clearly disappointed, especially Azamati, who had gone into the games certain he would win a medal.
However, his subpar performance may have resulted from the pain he experienced during the semi-final race due to a tight hip flexor. Weather conditions may have also contributed, as he mentioned on Monday.
Moving forward, Benjamin Azamati must now refocus his efforts on leading the 4x100m relay team, aiming to defend their gold medal title won in Rabat during the 2019 edition of the African Games.
On the women’s side, Boakye Mary secured seventh place in her 100m final, which was ultimately won by Gambia’s Gina Mariam with a time of 11.36 seconds.
