Fresh waves of violence have erupted in the turbulent town of Bawku following the recent killing of a Kusasi chief in Kumasi, which is thought to have spurred a series of retribution attacks.

Two more people were reportedly killed in Kumasi in connection with the current chieftaincy issues, causing further unrest in Bawku.

On Saturday night, a Bawku Senior High School student was allegedly pulled from his dormitory and shot to death by unknown intruders who gained entry by scaling the school’s perimeter wall.

People mistakenly believed the victim, Mossi, to be a member of one of the factions involved in the long-running chieftaincy struggle.

Authorities have yet to release an official comment about the incident.

In a related occurrence, Mahama Ayariga, Member of Parliament for Bawku and Majority Leader, had his home vandalised and set on fire later that night.

The extent of the damage to the property is unknown at this time.

Residents have reported constant gunshot exchanges around the municipality over the last two nights, raising concerns and causing many to stay indoors.

The Ghana Police Service and military soldiers are reportedly increasing their presence in the region in response to the deteriorating security situation.

The Bawku war, which stems from a long-standing chieftaincy feud, has seen frequent outbreaks of violence, often resulting in fatalities and property devastation.
