He stated that the result simply served to further bolster Ghana’s democratic credentials because of the manner in which it was conducted.
James Gyakye Quayson, candidate for the NDC and subject of the controversy over dual citizenship that prompted the by-election, won the race handily with 57.56 percent of the vote.
He prevailed over his competitors, who were members of the President’s own party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), as well as the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG).
President Akufo Addo extended his congratulations to the National Democratic Congress on Wednesday, June 28, and said, “I congratulate the National Democratic Congress on its victory yesterday.”
In addition to this, he extended his congratulations to both the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) and its Chairperson “for a job well-done.”
“The security services are to be commended for maintaining law and order during the holding of the elections; similarly, the media are to be commended for providing extensive coverage prior to, during, and after the elections.”
In light of the fact that the election results may go any way, he encouraged the followers of his party not to give up hope but rather to preserve their composure in spite of the uncertainty.
The President of Ghana, Nana Akufo Addo, exhorted everyone present to “live to fight another day.”
“We once held the Assin North seat, and I am confident that, sooner rather than later, Assin North will be blue again,” he assured me.
