Ghanaians call for arrest of Annoh-Dompreh over galamsey comments

Some concerned residents are demanding that Frank Annoh-Dompreh, member of parliament for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, be arrested for what they believe to be his complicity in the illicit mining practices, or “galamsey,” that have decimated the country’s water sources and forest reserves.

Environmentalists and other concerned citizens have joined together to condemn the MP’s alleged confession and call for immediate action from the police.

Unlike the present New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration, the former National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration, according to the Majority Chief Whip and Nsawam-Adoagyir MP, greatly increased water body pollution.

During an extraordinary session of parliament in Accra on Tuesday, September 3, Mr. Annoh-Dompreh answered the minority’s worries on the government’s inaction on the galamsey menace by stating that an inquiry will show that the NDC was responsible for more water contamination while in office.

“Duty bearers did not care about the menace,” said Awula Serwaa, coordinator for the Eco-Conscious Citizens, during an interview on Saturday’s The Big Issue on Channel One TV.

With his statement, Mr. Annoh-Dompreh admitted culpability and should be arrested, she claimed.

“I have a view that they (duty bearer) just don’t care,” she said. You may have noticed the recent “going ons” in parliament, where an MP would act like a kindergartener and argue about who is more responsible for polluting the water supply. Because you’re admitting that you haven’t poisoned as much as NDC has, he ought to be imprisoned; this is confessional behavior.

“This is not a competition,” the author emphasizes. An inferno has broken out in the home. A grave danger threatens our very survival. Problem solutions should be our priority. With enough political determination, we can find a solution now.

“Regrettably, the political will is lacking, and it is imperative that we, the individuals entrusted with the responsibility to preserve and defend the environment, act immediately prior to its irretrievable degradation.”
