Ghana’s Black Stars earned a hard-earned 1-0 win against Mali in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier at Accra Sports Stadium on Monday night, thanks to a crucial goal by defender Alexander Djiku.

His close-range finish early in the second half, in the 49th minute, proved decisive as Ghana extended their lead atop Group I to 19 points, three clear of second-placed Madagascar.

The match was fiercely competitive from the start, with Mali asserting early control. The Eagles dominated possession and pressed aggressively through midfield, forcing Ghana’s Kwasi Sibo and Thomas Partey into defensive roles to manage the pressure. Meanwhile, Djiku led Ghana’s defense calmly to keep Mali’s attacks in check.

Although Mali held the ball more, Ghana created the better chances in the first half. At the 25th minute, Caleb Yerenkyi linked well with Mohammed Kudus, but the final pass was thwarted by the Malian defense. Just before halftime, Antoine Semenyo missed a prime opportunity on a cross from Kudus, ensuring a goalless first half.

The game’s breakthrough came soon after the break when, in the 47th minute, Yerenkyi sent a long ball that unsettled Mali’s defense, causing their goalkeeper to fumble. From the corner kick that followed expertly delivered by Jordan Ayew Djiku rose highest to flick the ball into the net, sparking wild celebrations among the home fans.

Encouraged by the lead, Ghana pushed for a second goal. Kudus impressed again in the 55th minute with a dazzling run past three defenders, but his powerful shot was blocked. Substitute Kamaldeen Sulemana brought energy on the wings, nearly setting up Inaki Williams and missing a clear chance himself.

Mali kept pressing in the final stages, but Ghana’s goalkeeper Benjamin Asare made vital saves to deny any equalizer and protect the lead.

When the final whistle blew, Djiku’s goal was enough to secure the three points for Otto Addo’s side. The win strengthens Ghana’s command of Group I and brings them closer to qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
