Yaw Buaben Asamoa, a spokeswoman for Alan Kyerematen’s campaign and a former director of communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), claims that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is utilising government resources and staff to convince delegates to accept him as a candidate.
He claimed that this affected the findings of a survey that Global InfoAnalytics and Citi TV/Citi FM conducted among NPP delegates. The results of the survey showed that Dr. Bawumia is in the lead over the former Minister of Trade and Industry, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, and the Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, in the competition to lead the NPP into the general elections of 2024.

The survey indicates that Dr. Bawumia is in the lead with 34.8% of the votes, followed by Kyerematen with 27.9% and Kennedy Agyapong with 12.5% of the votes. Less than one percent of the votes were cast for the other candidates; 8.9 percent of voters chose not to say for whom they would cast their ballot; and 15.10 percent of voters were unsure who they would support.
In the event of a runoff, the poll indicates that Alan Kyerematen has a lead over Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia with 38% of the votes to Mahamudu Bawumia’s 37%. 16% of the delegates did not have a preference, and 9% of the delegates did not want to say who they would vote for in the event that there was a run-off.
Mr. Asamoah made these statements on Thursday during an interview on Eyewitness News broadcast on Citi FM in Accra.
“If somebody tells you that the Vice President is not out on the campaign trail, they are not being honest with you. He is sending government appointees all over the place to offer various incentives. They are the ones who are being ordered or threatened to carry out the action. There are those individuals who are given all kinds of assurances and promises.
“On a regular and consistent basis, there are teams of government appointees and party leaders travelling across the country to work on his behalf. “He is campaigning seriously with government resources and personnel moving around the country trying to get delegates to accept him as a candidate,” he claimed.
“So it is not about him himself. He is moving around the country trying to get delegates to accept him as a candidate.”
Mr. Buaben made the observation that many who took part in the event felt compelled to support the Vice President’s cause due to the grassroots campaigning that was being done on his behalf.
“Everything that has been discussed here is a component of the impacts that you see in the polling. People get the impression that if I am asked, it will be safer for me to say it in that manner rather than in the manner in which I first stated it. “There are events transpiring on the ground,” he went on to say.
In the meantime, Dr. Bawumia will be submitting his nomination forms to compete in the NPP Presidential Primaries in Accra today, which is the 16th of June, 2023.
Mr. Buaben expressed his conviction that Mr. Kyerematen will emerge victorious from the primary elections and go on to become Ghana’s next president.
There is no doubt in my mind that Alan will emerge victorious from this primary and go on to lead Ghanaians. The delegates are knowledgeable of the feelings held throughout the nation and are clear on who they want to lead them. We are aware of the situation on the ground, and he is making remarkable progress,” he went on to say.
