The National Democratic Congress (NDC) will hold its parliamentary primaries today, August 4, 2025, in the Akwatia Constituency in the Eastern Region. The goal is to choose a candidate for the next by-election.

The by-election will be held on September 2, after the death of Ernest Kumi, the serving Member of Parliament, on July 7 after a short illness.

Henry Boakye Yiadom, a former MP and candidate for the NDC in 2024; Erasmus Koney Ali, who is also known as Asanka, is currently an assembly member and presiding member; and lawyer Bernard Bediako Baidoo are all running for the NDC position.

The victor of today’s internal election will face off against Solomon Asumadu, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) well-known candidate, in what is expected to be a very close race.
