Ghana’s President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is worried about the fact that Russian mercenaries are stationed on the border between Ghana and Burkina Faso.
According to recent reports, the interim administration of Burkina Faso has reportedly contracted the services of the Russian military to assist the country in its war against terrorism.
The Interim Prime Minister of Burkina Faso, Apollinaire Joachim Kylem de Tambèla, is said to have gone to Russia to negotiate the terms of this deal. Reports say that the hired guns have been sent to the southern part of the country.
During a meeting with the United States Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, that took place on the margins of the US-African Leaders Summit on Wednesday, Ghana’s President Akufo-Addo called the recent incident “distressing” for his country. He stated that Russian mercenaries were now stationed on our northern border.
“Burkina Faso has now agreed to go AWOL with Mali in the employment of the Wagner forces there, and this agreement has been made official.” I have a feeling that they have been given the mines in the southern part of Burkina Faso as a sort of recompense for the services they have provided.
Over the course of the past 10 days, the Prime Minister of Burkina Faso has been in Moscow. And the fact that they are operating so close to our northern border is a source of special concern for us in Ghana.
Apart from the fact that we do not accept the concept of major powers, once again making Africa the theater of operation, we are particular about our position regarding the conflict in Ukraine, in which we have been very vocal and upfront in condemning Russia’s invasion, and as a result, having this group on our borders causes us considerable concern.
According to him, there were several reasons why the sub-regional body known as Ecowas made the decision to assume control of the coups d’état that occurred in Burkina Faso, Mali, and Guinea.
One of the reasons is to prevent a situation like the one that now exists in Burkina Faso with the mercenaries. This predicament is one of the causes.
The President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo, stated that all he was doing was bringing the issue to the attention of the Secretary of State, John Blinken.
