Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe and former Minister of Education, has officially announced his intention to run for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer position in the 2028 election.
Dr. Adutwum declared on Facebook on Wednesday, June 18, that he would enter the race once the party formally opens nominations.
“With humility, conviction, and a resolute heart, I, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, declare my intent to run for the flagbearership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), should nominations be officially opened by the party,” said the scientist.
Dr. Adutwum, noted for his efforts in education, is one of the NPP’s most recent senior members to express an open interest in heading the party into the 2028 general elections.
Dr. Bawumia, who served as Vice President under the Akufo-Addo administration, is widely seen as a contender, having previously contested and won the party’s 2023 flagbearer race. Other prominent figures, such as Kennedy Agyapong and Bryan Acheampong, are also preparing to run.
This declaration by Dr. Adutwum comes just a day after the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) formally announced its presidential primary for Saturday, January 31, 2026.
This has set the scenario for a tense race to be the party’s flagbearer in the 2028 federal elections.
