A/R: Drivers defy GPRTU fare reduction directive

Drivers

Most commercial drivers in the Ashanti Region have ignored the GPRTU’s instruction to lower transport fares, which was stated by the transport union.

The drivers claim that the 15% fare cut will only be available starting on Monday, May 26.

During Citi News’ visit to multiple transport hubs, the bulk of drivers continued to charge the old fares, with only a few implementing the drop.

While those who have yet to modify their prices assured that they will do so beginning Monday, those who have already decreased theirs expressed discontent with the decision, citing the high cost of spare parts and vehicle upkeep.

The GPRTU announced the 15% cut as part of efforts to reduce Ghanaians’ financial burdens following the recent cedi appreciation and decline in fuel costs.

Solomon Frimpong, a commercial driver, stated, “We are waiting for our leadership’s new fares before we can reduce them; until then, we are operating under the old rates.”

Another commercial driver, John Mensah, stated, “We have cut our fares, but we are dissatisfied with the new fares because they do not benefit us.

The pricing of spare parts remain unchanged; thus, this reduction will effect drivers.”
