On this day, Tuesday, November 29, 2022, former President John Dramani Mahama will turn 64 years old.
On this day in 1958, in Damango, the capital of the West Gonja District, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for president in 2020 was born to wealthy parents. His father was a teacher, while his mother was a rice farmer and politician.
His father, Emmanuel Adama Mahama, was the first Regional Minister of the Northern Region and the first Member of Parliament for West Gonja. He also served in both of those roles.
E.A. Mahama worked in the administration of Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first president. From the 24th of July 2012 to the 7th of January 2017, Mr. Mahama served as President of Ghana.
After being Vice President from January 2009 to July 2012, he was officially named President on July 24, 2012, after the death of President John Evans Atta Mills, his immediate boss. After the elections in December 2012, he was chosen to take on the role of President on a permanent basis.
In the 2016 general election, the New Patriotic Party and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who Mr. Mahama had beaten in the 2012 election, beat him when he tried to get re-elected.
Because of this, he holds the distinction of being the first president in the history of the Fourth Republic to serve only one term as President of Ghana. The election for the year 2020 was another one he lost.
Mr. Mahama is an authority in communication as well as a historian and author. Between the years 1998 and 2001, he served as Minister of Communication while also serving as a Member of Parliament from 1997 until 2009.
