8 suspects arrested as police rescue victims in viral kidnapping incident

Together with the Nigeria Police Force and the National Signals Bureau (NSB), the Ghana Police Service has successfully rescued two female victims who were kidnapped and later featured in a frightening video that went viral.

The horrific video, which showed the victims being abused, caused enormous indignation and fear in both nations.

Eight people have been arrested in connection with the case after a rigorous joint operation. Authorities apprehended the suspects after discovering them hiding in various locations in Ghana and Nigeria.

The exercise showed that the security agencies worked closely together across borders.

The victims’ rescue and the suspects’ detention were confirmed in a statement released by the Ghana Police Service.

Authorities predict that as the investigation progresses, more details about the operation will become available.

“The Ghana Police Service would like to express its sincere appreciation to the Nigeria Police Force and the National Signals Bureau for their invaluable assistance and collaboration in the rescue and arrest operations,” the statement said.

An event decorator and hairdresser from Asiakwa, in the Eastern Region’s Abuakwa South Municipality, named Ama Serwaa Konadu, 39, was implicated in the incident. According to reports, she was kidnapped on Tuesday, April 22, after leaving her house for work.

The next day, several naked videos of her being beaten with a machete were shared by her captors. A GH₵500,000 ransom was requested by the kidnappers, who claimed to be holding her in Nigeria.

Her family immediately notified the police and other security services and provided the footage to help in the investigation.
