8 dead in clash between small-scale miners and soldiers guarding AGA Obuasi Mine

A violent battle between small-scale miners and military personnel defending the AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) Obuasi Mine reportedly killed eight people.

The incident in Ashanti Regional Town resulted in the burning of four automobiles.

The incident that occurred last night has raised emotions in the community.

According to Eric Gyamfi, an eyewitness who talked with Myjoyonline.com, the small-scale miners stormed the mine at midnight, arriving fully armed and opening fire.

The motive for the attack is unknown. Soldiers defending the plant responded with gunfire, killing over eight miners.

Injured people have been transferred to the Obuasi Government Hospital and the AGA Hospital for medical care, while the town worsens.

Following the fight, disgruntled small-scale miners took to the streets, vandalizing property and burning tires.

Four vehicles, including buses, have apparently been burnt, raising neighbors’ concerns.

“They’re burning tires on the road, and they’ve burned some AGA buses. Right present, the demonstration is still ongoing… The galamsey boys are demonstrating because some of their colleagues have been killed. “So they’re destroying things,” Mr Gyamfi told Myjoyonline.com.

The event has put the Obuasi community on edge, with security fears growing.

Authorities have yet to provide a clear description of what caused the nocturnal assault, and the situation remains unpredictable.
