50 of the 150 Ghanaians now held in the United States have been granted final deportation orders, and they are likely to return to Ghana by mid-year.
Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, announced this during a presentation in Parliament on Thursday, March 13.
He stated that the deportation processes for three Ghanaians have already been finished, with their departure slated for April 1, 2025.
According to the Washington mission’s updates, “There are currently 150 Ghanaians in detention across various centres in the US who are awaiting deportation for crimes such as rape, internet fraud, and illegal entry,” the Minister stated on the floor of Parliament.
He stated, “The court has issued final deportation orders to 50 of the 150 detainees. The expulsion is projected to take place by mid-2025.
The remaining 100 cases are either on appeal or have been rejected. One Ghanaian was permitted to seek medical attention after making representations to US officials on his behalf due to illness.
Three Ghanaians have also been processed and are set to travel from the United States on commercial planes on March 19, March 28, and April 1, 2025, respectively.
Mr Ablakwa highlighted that “ten (10) Ghanaians have also been interviewed by the Embassy to verify their nationality and ensure that they have received a fair hearing,” he said.
